Sunny Health & Fitness

If you’ve already seen the top five page we’ve put together for yoga mats, you’ll know that this one from Sunny Health and Fitness ticks a lot of boxes if you’re looking for something at the cheaper end of the market.

DURABLE TEAR-RESISTANT MAT: The tear-resistant mat will remain in-tact during more challenging or vigorous workout sessions image

If you’ve already seen the top five page we’ve put together for yoga mats, you’ll know that this one from Sunny Health and Fitness ticks a lot of boxes if you’re looking for something at the cheaper end of the market.

While you do get more for your money than with similarly priced mats, there are much better yoga and Pilates mats available if you can afford to spend a little more, especially with the Toplus mat. With that said, a lot of people just practice yoga occasionally, or are just getting started and want to learn more. For this latter group, a cheaper mat makes a good temporary solution, just be aware you may need to replace it again later with a more durable solution.

On this page, we’re going to take a deeper look at this very affordable floor exercise mat.

The Sunny Health & Fitness Non-Slip Yoga Mat Review

Sunny Health & Fitness Mat In Blue And Purple

Let’s get started with the aesthetics – this mat is available in two colors – blue and purple. As you would expect from a lower end product (in terms of price), its a plain mat so if you’re looking for something with a more exciting pattern than block color, you’ll need to choose one of the other alternatives.

This is certainly one of the thinner choices, making it easy to roll up and carry about with you when you’re on the move, and of course also means that you need less storage space for it to be put away when you’re not working out.

Nest, let’s take a step by step look at what you can expect from this mat, to get a rounded understanding.

A Quick Glance At The Sunny Health & Fitness Non-Slip Yoga Mat

Pros
  • Good tear resistance
  • Foam PVC material
  • Textured for better grip
  • Measures 68 inches long and 24 inches wide
  • Easy roll and lightweight
Cons
  • Thin at under 1/4 inch (4mm) thickness
  • Less strong grip than the Toplus mat above

With the headline points covered, we know what the good and bad points are with this yoga mat, so let’s discuss those in a bit more detail before moving on.

Good Tear Resistance

Blue and purple yoga mat side view

It’s inevitable that these mats will get rolled out flat then back up again. A lot of people will be traveling to join in with organized classes, but even those that use their mat exclusively at home will almost certainly put it away when not in use. That continual rolling and flattening will eventually cause the material of the mat to weaken, so having a well constructed mat is important.

Of course, all mats will give way eventually but the better they are, the longer they’ll last.

Foam PVC Material

Close up examples of PVC material

The foam material that forms this mat from Sunny Health & Fitness has two key features.

The first is the lightweight nature of foam itself. As we mentioned a second ago it needs to be tough to withstand repeated use, but at the same time it ideally should be as light as possible for transport purposes.

The second feature of the foam PVC is that it needs to provide grip – in other words it has to be non slip to be useful and safe. The tiny ridges solve this nicely on the surface, creating enough friction between a hand, foot or any other body part and the mat itself.

Textured For Better Grip

While we’re on the subject of the ridges, you can see in the close up of the mat surface that it’s made up of thousands (if not millions) of tiny bumps across the whole mat.

This isn’t as effective as the reversible surface on the Toplus mat, but does work reasonably well.

Measures 68 Inches Long By 24 Inches Wide

When we get to size, this is slightly inferior in every dimension to the Toplus, losing by 2 inches in length and the same margin of width. Offering 68 inches in length (that’s just under 173cm) and 24 inches in width (that’s just under 61cm) it’s noticeably smaller.

Easy Roll & Lightweight

Rolled mat

This mat is very easy to roll, but curiously weighs in almost a pound heavier than the Toplus. That’s got to be related to the material itself, as there’s lass mat to make up the weight here.

To be clear, 3 pounds isn’t hugely heavy to carry, and because this mat is smaller, it’s a little easier to maneuver when rolled.

Thin At Under 1/4 Inch (4mm) Thickness

More notable than the smaller size described above, though, is the thickness of the mat.

We noted in the Toplus review that it just about gets away with the thickness for comfort, so with this one you might just feel a bit too much floor through it, not least because you’re most likely to be working out on fairly solid flooring under the mat.

By comparison, Toplus’ mat offers 50% more thickness when the mat is flat, so the difference there is far more significant than the length or width. It probably does, however, help explain why it’s easier to roll up.

Less Strong Grip Than The Toplus Mat

We’ve touched on this already, but it’s worth really hammering the point home.

If you’re looking for a mat with great grip, the extra spend on the Toplus offering is worthwhile. The extra quality is reflected in the price tag, leaving mats like this as an option for those that can’t afford to justify the extra investment.

The T5R Round Up

Overall if you need a mat for floor exercises like yoga or Pilates, you will find that this one from Sunny Health and Fitness does tick many of the boxes for those on a budget. If you’re looking for something to use regularly though, you could easily find yourself wishing you’d spent a little more on a better mat. As we’re not talking about huge sums of money, be sure to at least consider the Toplus mat alongside this one before making your decision.
